One Lunch is Here to Stay, at Least Until June

In February, Green Run High School started this new thing called one lunch; there are many good and bad things students and teachers have said about this.

Instead of assigning students to four separated lunches, they decided to let students have only one lunch for fifty minutes. No, not every student can squeeze into the cafeteria to eat lunch; they can go anywhere in the school and hangout with their friends or be by themselves. Although, some people may disagree with one lunch because of the chaotic things that had happened or can happen, many people agree with this one lunch.

“Well there’s time for me to hang out with my friends. My friends are in GRC so we don’t really have time to hang out with each other” Junior Brianna Wilson said.

“I like that you can hang out with friends, you can go study with teachers and there’s a variety of activities you can do at the same time having one hour to just chill,” senior Elizabeth Figueroa said. “One lunch will be improved if it was a little bit longer but since I’m not going to be here next year it really doesn’t matter.”

Despite the positivity one lunch has received, there are still problems present. An issue many students and even teachers have with one lunch is the fact that the school is simply too small for everyone that’s walking around trying to get to places. Sophomore Christopher Miller stated, “The size of the school is definitely an issue, with the crowded hallways it ends up becoming a game of bumping into people and constantly saying excuse me.”

It’s not just the hallways that are crowded it’s the lunch lines as well. The lunch lines even before one lunch were entirely too long and it has only gotten worse since it began. “You can go into the line right when one lunch begins and not get out until near the end, and the food served definitely isn’t worth the wait,” said Sophomore David Tennant.

Another issue students have with one lunch is the fact that they aren’t able to leave school grounds. The reason why this is a problem isn’t the usual case of a student just wanting to get out of school. Miller exclaimed “Students should be able to leave the building, I think allowing this would clear the traffic in the hallways and definitely in the lunch lines.” Of course students should be expected to make it back to school on time before 4th block begins.”

Although getting back on time isn’t the issue according to assistant principal John Cosimano, “We are accountable for the students at this school and it’s our job to ensure that they are safe, not only that but in case of an emergency we have to be able to reach the student.” So for student safety reasons, the school can not allow students to leave the building during one lunch.

While one lunch may have its problems it is a relatively new system, so there’s no doubt that improvements could be made to this and the school.
