School Might Start 2 Hours Later

Virginia Beach City Public Schools(VBCPS) had a meeting, and Daniel Keever (Senior Director of VBCPS of high schools) has recommended that high school start times should be pushed back to 9:20am to match research on students’ health and sleep patterns. Causing the school start times to change in all school levels.

Elementary A Schools: 7:30-2pm

Elementary B Schools: 8:00-2:30pm

Middle Schools:8:40-3:10pm

High Schools:9:20-4:10

If start times were changed, what are the changes needed to make in order to compliment this? Well, it would increase operating costs with new buses, more bus drivers, and high school field lighting, but this isn’t final as it’s still being approved from the final board to take effect.

Francisco’s Take

If the schedule changes, students may wake up at the same time currently (around 4am-7am) then the time change wouldn’t matter because they have the same amount of sleep, but have more time at their disposal.

Businesses would also be impacted because students would have to change their schedule, considering high school students are more likely to spend their money, but they can’t spend it at a closed store, along with students have jobs and they would have to change their work hours to best accommodate with the school time change.

High school students are very limited with their time, because they may have after-school activities, homework, jobs’, and using time hanging out with their friends, or family, this change will limit their time a lot, unless they figure out how to properly manage their time. This would cause a lot of issues with students because most of them do not know how to manage their time, and I feel like we should keep our schedule as it to avoid complications with schedules.
